Counseling and Support Ministries

Pastor on Call
One of our pastors is on call every day, 24 hours a day. The Pastor of the Day can be reached during normal office hours by calling the Church at 235-0496 and asking for the Pastor of the Day. After hours contact can be made by calling the Church main number, 235-0496, and then pressing "2" for Pastor of the Day information.

Pastoral Calling Team
The Pastoral Callers Ministry exists to enlarge and extend the pastoral heart throughout the congregation of FPC. Pastoral callers are both trained and gifted with nurturing hearts and compassionate temperaments. They visit those members of our congregation who have suffered a death or other loss, those who are alone and lonely, those who are ill and homebound or have been discharged from the hospital, and also those who face a traumatic situation. Pastoral Callers serve and report directly to our pastors, alerting them to situations which need deeper or expanded care.

The team meets twice monthly with Pastor George Moore to be equipped for service, to pray for those members who receive calls or visits, and to encourage one another. The team includes: Andy Anderson, Charlotte Chandler, Ann Crider, Ann DeCarlo, Bruce Evashevski, Kate Hellier, Tom Lide, Carol Loyless, Debbie Martin, Buddy May, Pat May, BJ Pate, Frances Privette, Joann Reed, Thom Robelot, Emilie Simpson, Edward Stall, Stella Stall, Kim Taylor, Jackie Thompson, Wanda Todd, and David Webster.

If you feel that God is calling you to be a part of this ministry, contact Pastor Moore at 672-1755 or Ann DeCarlo at 834-5756 or 905-5198 (cell).

Prayer Ministry
We believe in the power of prayer here at First Presbyterian Church! We have a committed group of individuals willing to intercede in prayer for you and your family. We have individuals who will pray with you in person after each worship service in the Light Court by the Sanctuary. We have a weekly bulletin insert of focused prayer concerns, "The Family Prayer Page." We ask the congregation to remove this insert and take it home with them and pray throughout the week for the individuals and their specific prayer needs. We have a Congregational Intercessory Prayer Team who will pray confidentially for your specific prayer needs.

To notify us of any specific prayer needs or to be added to the weekly bulletin prayer insert, please contact the Congregational Care office by calling 235-0496, ext. 243, emailing us at prayer@firstpresgreenville.org. For more information about the Prayer Ministry, please visit our Prayer Ministry page.

Visitation Ministry
Our Pastors are scheduled to visit the hospitals every day and the nursing homes every week. Shut-ins are visited quarterly with communion. If you are scheduled to go in the hospital, nursing home, or you can't get to church and are shut-in, please contact the church and let us know so we can provide ongoing pastoral care.

Counseling Ministry
Pastors are generally available for short term counseling on an individual basis by contacting the Pastors individually.

Stephen Ministry (Crisis Care)
This is a one-on-one crisis care ministry. Our VISION is to provide confidential, Christian care and nurture by supporting individuals through a time of personal crisis. For more information on our Stephen Ministry program and a printable copy of our brochure, please visit our Stephen Ministry page.

Helping Those In Need:

Turner Memorial Fund
One of the main objectives of the First Presbyterian Church mission statement is “We will love others through service after the example of Christ.” The goal of First Presbyterian’s Turner Memorial Fund is to help any member or family who is in a financial crisis and has no other place to turn.

This fund was originally established as the Member Crisis Fund. The name was changed to the Turner Memorial Fund in memory of Dr. Fred P. Turner, a former pastor, who was instrumental in helping meet the financial needs of individuals and families in emergency situations.

The funds for this ministry are non-budgeted funds and are solely dependent upon member contributions. The Turner Memorial Fund Committee, a sub-committee of the Congregational Care Ministry, reviews each request and determines how the funds are distributed. For members who may be unaware of this fund and its purpose, and in response to the rising needs within our church, the Committee has felt the need to bring this ministry to the attention of the congregation. Your contributions are needed and greatly appreciated.

A Message from
Rev. Stan Johnson

Jesus gave us a personal illustration of pastoral care in John 13. Much to the objection of Peter, Jesus proceeds to wash the feet of the disciples. In this story Jesus says an astounding thing to Peter: “If you do not allow me to wash your feet, you have no part with me.” In other words, if you don’t learn a lesson here, Peter, you will be of no value to me in my work. What was this all-important lesson? The washing of feet symbolized the essence of what believers of all ages are called to do. Christ calls His disciples to a life of humble service. It is a call to care for one another.

The ministries of Congregational Care are “foot washing” ministries. It is often behind-the-scenes, low-profile service that does not attract a lot of accolades. But we strive to be true partners with Christ in the work of healing and wholeness. On another occasion Jesus said, “Whoever gives even a cup of cold water in my name shall not lose his reward.”

Congregational Care, however, goes even beyond this. Not only do we exist to serve, but we model a style of leadership that places service to others as the power behind its effectiveness. Like Christ, we are living examples of all He has called us to be. Just as the disciples learned from the ministry of Jesus what it means to love one another, our prayer is that we too may model true Christian love that all may know that we are His disciples.
Numbered among the ministries that make up Congregational Care are FirstPAWS, Stephen Ministry, the various aspects of the Prayer Ministry, Pastoral Callers, Military Ministry, and Elderberries. We would treasure the opportunity to talk to you if you sense God calling you to a ministry of giving yourself to others and thus fulfilling the law of Christ.

Further information is available by calling the church office (235-0496) and asking to speak to Tammy or Stan.
