Epistle to the Romans. Rome was the epicenter of the powerful Roman Empire, ruling over many of the great ancient centers of Western civilization. New Testament scholars consistently regard the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans as one of the most significant and influential of his epistles. Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome, probably while he was in Corinth on his third missionary journey, circa A.D. 57 (Acts 20:2–3). He sought to provide a concrete theological foundation on many diverse topics, including the grace of God, the sovereignty of God in salvation, spiritual growth, the righteousness and mercy of God, and the significance of salvation by faith accomplished by the atoning death of Jesus Christ. The epistle is considered a systematic exposition of the gospel while highlighting Paul’s sweeping vision of God’s character and nature reflected in the inseparable love of Christ. Paul also wrote to unite the Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome and to establish the church in Rome as the base of operations from which he could proclaim the gospel in Spain (Romans 15:22–24). Rome was the epicenter of the powerful Roman Empire, ruling over many of the great ancient centers of Western civilization. Lunch is served beforehand at 11:30am and dinner 5:30pm in Fellowship Hall.
